Portfolio Creation

Portfolio images to be used have already been selected due to job field aims (polygon modeling)
Images to be implemented into portfolio book. Allows for visual work to be studied for quality and detail (which is required in job field.) Book to be printed professionally to guarantee clarity of imagery.
Images organised into applicable flow (order of appearance)

Front cover design to be consistent with business card. - (Dual texture to be implemented if found to be available) - update - unavailable for print
Inside flap to be stylised in hand writing font since text given is written in manner of personal note / personalised intro into my portfolio.
Text centralised to offer balance

First page = black - first image to be shown wanted to be double page spread = first single page left blank

Best work (personal favourite) shown first. 2 page spread shown to offer size however space left to include description - second image showing organic lamps + room in dark atmosphere adding to show the full effects achieved in full animation
Plain clear text used to offer clarity and formal appearance

Workflow follows with biggest project = Maserati car - blended with mountain range project for exhibition image.
Text title large to draw attention
Text written in column layout to flow down page with three images to left.
Right page consists of final image = big to show
Right page bottom left = one project implemented
Right page bottom right = other project implemented
These come together to form picture above

Workflow moves onto glass works. Glass works offer sight into various techniques self taught to learn polygon modelling software
Pictures are identical, bar copper finish to plain white finish - showing stylisation's of identical geometry / camera / light.
Due to pictures equating to same project ~ title written to right of left page - text written to left of right page so all text is more centralised since text involves both images

Left side shows 3 experiments leading to larger crisp image of final result so detail can be viewed

Text title large to draw attention
Text written in column to flow down page with three images to left.

Explosion pictures offer very high detail so shown as large as possible
Picture on right considered for double spread but majority of detail lost in centre of page bindings
Title and text written across both pages as text is relevant to both
Text on both pages centralised since both images are created with central orientation.

Robot picture created as portrait - important to get full picture shown
Lanscapes used to show detail however effects were applied to add variation + stylisation.
Text all offset to right to match reversed application of appearances i.e. so far main image has always been on right page and text offset to left (or centre if required) so reverse was implemented

Large landscape picture offer high detail so is spread across 2 pages
To add focus no second image was placed.
Text was centralised to column to offer balance to column (vertical)
Text is aligned left due to personal preference (left, centre and right were trialed as page layout is unique with no formula to follow)

Information kept small as techniques used have either been previously described or considered standard skills
Text offset towards centre as text applies to both pages

Multiple random images placed on left to indicate multiple other projects in work (which is true). Smaller images = not as much depth of imagery required
Bigger picture shows 3 main projects collaborated into one to show mini collaboration of work.
Layout used on left page designed to reverse mimic right hand page layout.
Right hand page layout created to suggest film real layout. (Images going across top in sequence)
Big image equals detail view - chosen last as biggest project currently working on. Big image chosen as pose focuses on reader.

Last page left blank to match blank page in beginning the book

Hand drawn signature in back to signify end of work.....my work + personal touch
Personal touch to match inside flap of front of book note which is designed as personal touch

Back page symbol consists of modelling process stages in link chain
Chain layout in circle to indicate repetitive process
Start a project - go through all stages - end project - begin new project
Summarises / reflects book contents in a nutshell like a conclusion, ending the book - hence back cover

Presentations

Presentation 1 - Exhibition visit

Produced via Keynote
File exported as quicktime video with stop positions implemented to allow control over video
Presentation on included CD - (Exhibit tour manual + Exhibit tour auto)
Manual file requires clicking on screen to move forward each slide
Auto file plays through as a video.

Presentation 2 - Theme promotion - Layout video 3D walkthrough
Produced via 3ds max
Entire lobby was replicated - desired exhibition layout was then implemented into space - single sample board created and replicated to represent all boards
Walkthrough camera then produced
Sequenced rendered
Presentation on included CD - (Olympic theme walkthrough)

File too large to load to blogger - screen shot loaded instead

Presentation efforts to create full 3d environment to allow visualisation of idea to be realised.
Any visual problems or poor layout choices can be viewed in environment and don't have to be left too assumptions.
Seating layout in centre allows for patrons to either view tv screens or boards placed on opposite side
Track layout guarantees clear path left to walk across mezzanine + incorporates olympic theme

New compressed video created and uploaded to blog

No new presentation required

Exhibition Work

Blog site does not accept full quality versions (file size too big)
Will create lower quality screen shots for blog

Reasons for decisions behind imagery

Replication techniques can be important aspect of polygon modelling. Attention to detail + ability to accurately re-create geometry realistically is an important skill to show.

New "write ups" written to go with pictures on boards when displayed at exhibit:

Descriptions kept short to not overwhelm patrons.
Descriptions describe content shown and why project was undertaken

Bio
Creative individual with a flair for visual artistry discovered a new passion whilst studying Sustainable Design and Innovation. After first experiencing polygon modelling software last year has untaken the task of learning how to model at a professional level to pursue as a career. Exhibition allows for current progression level to be critically viewed.

Exhibition Website progression

Project halted until group theme decided

initial considerations untaken and broadcasted to group

Conversed with graphics team to set out appropriate template

Begin self teaching of website creation software to be used = Dreamweaver CS5

Template to create

1000pixels width

Header - Graphics strip area
Menu bar
Sub header - Graphics strip area
Content - for web teams to work on own page
Footer - extra height for graphics

Template created via tables

Insert - table - 1 coloumn x 5 rows

Select top cell - insert - image objects - image place holder - set size (1000 x 125 pixels)

insert image place holders in header, sub header, footer

Footer image holder (1000 x 80 pixels)

Theme selected - while waiting for graphics teams visual input will create basic layout of each page

Begin self teaching of web hosting
   - how to web host
   - how much it costs
   - restrictions

Website host company selected = 000webhost.com = free hosting, no ads, restricted functionality

Website domain created = aru-exhibit2012.site11.com = free domain name

Setup FTP functionality to allow connection to edit website

Basic menu functionality added allowing simple changing between four basic test pages
Hyperlinks added to each page in basic menu via adding links in dreamweaver onto images representing buttons

website upload tested = working so far

Enabled check in - check out to allow files to be uploaded and downloaded from site instead of offline file moving between web team.

Next step to create template pages with all links working so web team can access pages and build each individual page from site with working links

Very basic template added
Tested upload / download
Tested links
Tested Image swap

Asked class for help on online building - no replies yet  - update = zero replies

Sent message to web team so they can progress offline until sorted:

Havent herd back form anyone about shared working online. If people want to get started on their page simply create an offline one and we can put it up later

to make sure ur working n same format in dreamweaver on design page
go to insert - table - choose 1000pixel width - 5 rows - 1 column
Press ok and align to centre
work within forth row and expand and add customise this row as you wish

Row 1 - Header - graphics team
Row 2 - menu bar - il do and implement later
Row 3 - graphics bar
Row 4 - yours, go nuts
Row 5 - footer - il do later

no idea about colours etc from graphics team so worry about content for now
I have received no pictures for content at this time either lol

Learn how to create spry menu system - (menu which drops to menu - which drops to menu)

attempt to implement on personal website first

After 3hrs of errors n code n misery FINALLY managed to execute successful spry menu on live website with successful testing across 4 test pages
Unable to Successfully turn menu into library asset at the moment

Out with the old

In with the new

Not worth stylising via CSS manipulation due to lack of theme input from graphics team at this moment

Graphics team give Visual input

Content from this image to be centred - extended background to be used to surround central data

Final design differs from pre-agreed template -
                     - menu set to left of header not below across entire width
                     - no sub header
Alterations to basic template to be made

Added images given by graphics

Background image added easily via page properties. Logo image encountered difficulties. Image first added to table cell - however menu could not be placed properly as requested by graphics team.
Image then added to cell background - method for adding images to cell backgrounds only learnt through research.
Spry menu cell widths reduced - introduced to above field with logo background
Spry menu requested with different colour names for each field. - Cannot be accomplished via dreamweaver spry (to my knowledge + research)

Technique found to be located within cell attributes field - menu moved into desire position freely

Image added however contained white background which was not desired.

J-peg

PNG - 32 hold higher level of image data to support desired transparency

New result achieved - spry menu colours changed via CSS style sheet manipulation - however since style sheet covers controls for menu - entire menu colour is changed - other techniques to be researched

Attempted to add 50% opacity background to main content section Cannot be accomplished via dreamweaver (to my knowledge of 4hr+ research)
Begin self teaching of slideshows methods
Begin self teaching flash
Created test files via flash
Created via keynote slide show produced
 - converted to quicktime file
 - converted via adobe media encoder
 - converted to swf via flash
LOTS of detail lost during process however for TESTING purposes is acceptable

Implemented within webpage

Uploaded to website

Transitions work as expected

Transparent Anglia ruskin logo added to bottom of page

- Hyper link added linking to Anglia ruskin homepage

Need to neaten up flash box on web page - need to find method of implementing central background (preferably semi opaque) due to strong background

Taken comments under review

Conveyed with Graphics team
New Background decided
5X colours with gradient fading in from left to white
Setup default image to be adjusted so web sam can adjust
Uploaded to group email address

Text left in separate layer shows codes of different colours

New menu fields agreed upon

Home = Home
Bio = Students
Gallery = Removed
Info = Contact us
Find us (new)

Received email from graphics team
Design changed again.
Cancel all work to prepare to start again.

Requests received for new domain name which would be more rememberable

site removed

Site Rebuilt at:

http://retroresolution.site90.com/

New logo design acquired and converted for website

New Background received

New logo implemented
New background implemented
New Menu Built replacing Spry menu system with Simpler menu

Date and time placed at top centre of page as this is most important information of front home page
Required to be first thing visible to public when they log on to website

(Date corrected as shown below)

Flash slideshow progression taking time to implement at high quality - with time being factor of group work decision was taken to implement slideshow using freeware javascript to aid in programming. Display method of freeware controls image layout of central large image with thumbnails being shown below.

Of all work submitted (on time) took one image from each student and implemented into slide show to create focus point of index page (home page)
This is believed to be necessity due to experience when viewing other websites hosting galleries that examples of work on display are shown  to allow public to view a sample of what is on show (preview of what to expect)

All work gathered in group meeting to be implemented on to website

All work implemented to website.

All links created - left for group testing

Errors noted (2) - to be fixed

Links fixed

New buttons menu implemented - all links re-worked
Error found whilst using IE - new buttons carried outlines
New code added to correct error

Added missing data to students bio page + galleries as arrives

Created images for names for bio pages
Efects included rounding edges + applying different colour stroke edge for definition
- however upon shrinking to size extra details are lost resulting in blurry results -
Decision taken to use text system instead of images + web friendly text fonts.
Text system guarantees clarity + compatability with all browser types.

Personal CV design progression

CV content to include:

Personal details
- Profile statement
- Educational achievements
- Work experience
- Other (possibly if relevant)

Work experience to be either minimised or not included.
Decision due to low quality of work experience and no relevance to desired job field of interest.
Column system to remain but organised more efficiently.
Other section to be removed as not necessary.

Design to be reduced to fit on single page for clarity and connivence of client
Single page allows for card to be used as no fixings will be required (paper clip / staple etc)

Deign to be implemented from business card design as creativity of personal identity is being discovered through business card development

Text design implemented form business card design
Background design implemented from business card / portfolio design

Layout chosen for titles to be offset to left to allow quick reference to desired section
Actual content centralised (indented) laid out in statement form in column
Grades offset to right to allow for quick reference
Once all university grades are finalised all modules will be given grades + final degree grade + CV reproduced

Background design to interact with text but not obscure

Implementation of design to actual document encountered many problems.

Printing from home - printer cannot print card + no bleed printing = insufficient quality

Printing from university - Informed cannot print on black card, did not understand the concept of bleed printing amazingly. Had to setup up myself across counter an invert print on card to check print quality of printers on card - was not impressed and decided to investigate else where

Further investigation - managed to locally achieve bleed printed CV on white card, however colour is washed out due black print onto white card. Reverse is left white.

Company that produced Business cards would be able to produce high quality CV on black card. Dual texture feature of business card would also be implementable improving on quality. Both side printing would be available allowing for background to be applied to reverse improving quality further.
CV could not be ordered in time for deadline.

Bleed print (washed out) versions included with work as highest quality achievable in time.

With more time and resources it is fully believed that exact desired result is achievable despite difficulties.

Business card design progression

Initial design research

Final slide is website links for images

Initial design research consisted of browsing through business cards in general
Business cards shown in slides show a filtered selection of cards. Cards chosen for inspiration because of:
Innovation - Creative and distinctive that doesn't blend into the crowd
Distinction - stand out from the crowd
Style - ability to show personal style through card
Relation to theme method (photographer business card looks like camera)
Personal Preference - personal tastes

Initial Business card ideas compilation

(c) Richard Jones 2012

Design aim = Digital design
Designs consist of free flow design ~ no restrictions experimentation
Allowing for random ideas and possible inspiration

BUSINESS CARD - RE-FOCUS

Look into what should go into business card design
Two main focus points decided:
1. Me - personal identity - factors / character traits + statements that can be applied
2. Job area focus - Digital design.

First screen shot above shows board created on self focus.
Second screen shot shows image web links

Screen shot reflects on distinct personality traits that can be express visually.
Features of board can be deemed as "too personal" or not job relevant.
Features that will be considered:
     Contrast
     Balance
Duality - use of two features to contrast / offset yet equate to balance

First screen shot above shows board created on Digital Design.
Second screen shot shows image web links

Screen shot used to identify features to be implemented into business card related to digital design
Features of board considered more appropriate / implementable to business card design.
Features to be considered:
     Connections
     Nodes
     Circuit board

New design 1

Design consists of pixel design
Lots of room required + low clarity
Shrinking Pixel size would improve clarity however would begin to lose desired pixel appearance
Alternative colours implemented however did not fit offer significant improvements

New Design 2

Clean layout - clear font
Connections and nodes implemented via logo.
Design although offering "clean" appearance is considered "plain"

New Design 3

Design to create font consisting of connections and nodes. Design halted due to lack of clarity of text despite implementing white box. Node appearance like however decided to not implement text into design

New Design 4

Connections and nodes implemented to induce circuit board like appearance. Different shades of grey offer depth of field

Design 4 further development -

Circuit board design to be "enhanced"
Use of colour effect and glow to give appearance of circuit board flowing with power

Default font text implemented to test appearance
Text on-purposely overlaps with background pattern to test visibility
Colour although effective does not offer depth as first thought (personal taste)

Design 4 further development -

Opacity modifier layer and colour burn modifier layer implemented to add detail to appearance

Multiple at tamps allowed for visually appealing appearance however felt to detract from original purpose
Opacity fade to be implemented but colours will be removed

Design 4 further development -

Opacity fade implemented
Text altered to not overlap
Font adapted to font with majority of straight lines - clarity maintained by keeping clear font
Name becomes focus over "Digital design" due to recommendation
Focus achieved due to font placement and brightness (colour)

Back cover created - same design features for constancy
Same font implemented as front cover
Offset placement to flow with front of card

Current design implements lots of DIGITAL features but very little personal identity
Personal identity feature to make card creative and different from other cards on display at exhibition.
Personal identity feature to be implemented = Contrast.

Contrast to be implemented to design through contrasting textures - smooth and matte

Print options - Implementing Dual Texture

Contrast achieved through two textures, matte card with UV coating on details offer contrasting appearance and feel.
